What is IELTS Exam Pattern for Canada Immigration?

IELTS Band Requirement for Canada PR

In order to qualify and submit your Express Entry profile through any one of the three federal economic immigration programs managed by Express Entry, you must score the following:

• Federal Skilled Worker Program- You must obtain a minimum score of CLB 7 in all 4 abilities, i.e., writing, reading, speaking and listening
• Federal Skilled Trades Program- You must obtain minimum CLB 5 for speaking and listening, and CLB 4 for reading and writing
• Canadian Experience Class- You must score minimum CLB 7 for NOC 0 or A jobs or CLB 5 for NOC B jobs 

IELTS Exam Pattern for Canada Immigration 2022 

There are two types of IELTS examinations, i.e., Academic and General Training. The IELTS Academic is for study permit and can be taken either in a test centre or on computer, and can also be taken online from your home or any another private setting with stable internet connection. While IELTS General Training can be taken only at a test centre either on computer or on paper.

Applicants are tested for four key abilities, i.e., reading, writing, listening, and speaking.

Let's talk about four modules in detail.

IELTS Reading Section

This section consists of 40 questions and tests you on a wide range of reading skills. Like reading for gist, for main ideas, for detail, understanding logical argument, skimming, and recognising opinions attitudes and purpose of writers.

IELTS Writing Section

There are two tasks to be completed, i.e., Writing Task 1 and Task 2. The topics given in each task are related to general interest.

For Writing Task 1, candidates get a situation and must write a letter to explain the situation. While for Writing Task 2, candidates have to write an essay in response to their point of view, problem or argument.

IELTS Speaking Section

This section takes around 11 to 14 minutes and has a total of 3 parts. In the first part, examiner asks a few general questions related to work, studies family, hobbies, etc. While in the second part, candidates get a topic to speak on for two minutes. For the third part, they’ll have a two-way discussion with the examiner.

IELTS Listening Section

In this section, candidates will listen 4 recordings and must answer 40 questions based on those recordings. The first 2 recordings have everyday context. while the last two focuses on situations related to education or training.
