General Skilled Migration (GSM) A key Australia Immigration Pathway The General Skilled Migration (GSM) is the key pathway to immigrate to Australia or get the Permanent Residency (PR) in the land of Kangaroos. The General Skilled Migration is based on a point system, wherein the profile of all immigration applicants is evaluated. There are three main visa categories fall under the General Skilled Migration Program, i.e. Skilled Regional (Provisional) Subclass 489 Visa Subclass 489 Visa is the temporary visa issued for four years by the Australian government to foreign skilled workers to live and work in regional or low population growth metropolitan area in Australia. However, to apply for this visa you need a nomination from regional Australia or a family member living in regional Australia. Skilled Nominated Subclass 190 VisaThis is a state nominated permanent visa issued by the Australian government for the overseas skilled workers to live and work in Australia on a permanent basis. To apply for this visa an applicant needs to obtain the nomination from State or territory government agency in Australia. There are various states in Australia, i.e. Canberra (Australian Capital Territory), South Australia, Western Australia, Victoria, etc. which invite the nomination applications from foreign skilled workers. You can choose the state to apply for the nomination accordingly.

Skilled Independent Subclass 189 Visa Subclass 189 Visa as the title suggests is the independent visa that doesnt require any nomination or sponsorship from a state or any family member living in Australia. This permanent visa allows the applicants to live and work in Australia on a permanent basis. How does the point system in GSM work? All the applicants need to register their profile and submit EOI (Expression of Interest) in the online SkillSelect System. The point system evaluates the profile of an applicant and subsequently, allocate the points to each applicant based on their profile factors, i.e. age, work experience, language skills, qualification, etc. You also get points for nomination received from an Australian state. As an applicant, you need to score minimum 60 points based on your profile factors to qualify for GSM. However, to obtain the ITA (Invitation to apply) for applied GSM Visa, you need to score higher points than just qualifying marks. If you are selected in the GSM, you will get the ITA (invitation to apply) for your applied visa. You will need to apply within 60 days of receiving the ITA via GSM program.
